Reading the Tennis Times

Those who are especially keen on what’s coming up next in tennis will no doubt find this season to be another extraordinary time. Fans all over the world are waiting for the French Open schedule , and at this time of year, predictions are made and dashed every day. The Spaniards are particularly strong again, and some of the most interesting news and gossip come regularly from the celebrity hounds. Carlos Moya, Rafa Nadal, and Juan Carlos Ferrero are always in the news, and their personal lives are often almost as interesting as their lives on the court.

But it’s another fellow countryman who has always left the most interesting gaps, where fans are left to fill these with the power of their imaginations. David Ferrer may not be the most extroverted player, but he is certainly ranking extremely high on charisma. There’s something enormously appealing about a player who can be that aggressive on the court, and so quiet in presenting himself to the celebrity world of tennis. While other players might be seen hanging out at the beach with their girlfriends, or hitting the clubs after hours, Ferrer likes to spend time with his parents. His biggest passion is reading, and reading classics nonetheless. This is an interesting and very enigmatic hero in the making.

He’s never been a great fan of playing on the grass, and that makes some of the predictions for the 2010 Wimbledon scores against his favor. However, the strength of his numbers as they’ve changed from 2004 do demonstrate a solid progression, although it might be a bit uneven. This adds to his mystique, because it also suggests that with Ferrer, anything could happen. We have to pay attention, then, as something comes from nothing often in this game, but there’s enough here to suggest that this creation in process might be a humble, but powerful force to reckon with this summer.
